The School of Management and Engineering (SME) was established when Nanjing University was striving for the “coordinated development of arts, science, engineering and medicine.” It is a young and vigorous school. It is located in a garden-like courtyard with lush bamboos and blooming flowers outside the west gate of the North Garden of Nanjing University’s Gulou Campus. At the center of the courtyard sits the old residence of Professor Chen Yuguang, former president of Jinling University.
SME faculty and students have been adhering to its motto of “Acquiring Knowledge with Honesty and Serving the Community with a Sense of Responsibility”. They have made arduous efforts and achieved great success in spite of all the hardships.
SME dates back to the university’s Institute of Management Science and Engineering, which was founded in 2001. It was then changed into the School of Management and Engineering in 2003.
Currently, SME offers a first-level doctoral discipline and a post-doctoral program in management science and engineering and a second-level master’s discipline in control science and intelligent engineering. SME’s management science and engineering is a key discipline in Jiangsu Province. Its computational management science and business intelligence, which is an interdisciplinary track, and its management science and engineering have been selected as the advantageous disciplines of Jiangsu Province (the second and third phases).
SME also offers three professional master’s programs in engineering management, finance and control engineering, as well as three bachelor’s programs in industrial engineering, financial engineering and automation. They form a complete talent training system for undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students.
SME’s faculty enjoys a diverse academic background and a rigorous and inclusive academic style. It has attracted a number of outstanding scholars from at home and abroad, forming a young, vigorous, united and progressive teaching team. There are more than 50 full-time faculty members, with an average age below 40 years old. Most faculty members have received their doctoral degrees from famous universities at home and abroad and have the experiences of overseas study, research and visits.
SME always takes talent training as its foundation. Based on the interdisciplinary advantage, SME has proposed the idea of “Management-Control Integration” and integrated the idea into its knowledge of talent training. SME is committed to cultivating interdisciplinary engineering and management personnel with international perspectives, solid foundational theories, extensive knowledge, strong engineering skills and innovative spirit.
SME pays special attention to international cooperation and exchange and has developed joint programs with Oxford University, National University of Singapore, University of Sydney, Curtin University, Ruhr-University Bochum and other universities.
